Barryroe Parish - Nice to meet you!

Barryroe parish lies to the east of Clonakilty and south of Timoleague. TY student and Barryroe parishioner Lily O’Sullivan presents her parish here for summer visitors and would-be visitors from the other five parishes of our family of parishes.

This is the first in a series of brief articles by TY students in Clonakilty Community College presenting our six parishes in turn.

Barryroe is predominantly a farming and fishing peninsula. We have various sports teams and facilities such as Barryroe GAA pitch for training and matches as well as a walking track surrounding the pitches. Representatives of the rowing club in Courtmacsherry, a village on the northern edge of the parish, won the Southwest Rowing Club of the Year in 2022.

Barryroe parish has two churches. The Church of the Sacred Heart in Courtmacsherry was opened in 1886 making it 139 years old, while the Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, in Barryroe has been around since 1869 making it over 150 years old. These churches are the successors to earlier churches and chapels in Lislee, Lislevane, Butlerstown, Kilsillagh, Donoghmore, and others.

Barryroe attracts many visitors to the area because of its beautiful beaches, coastline, walks, and places to eat. It is steeped in rail, maritime and social history. Courtmacsherry has a whale watching service, and the chance to partake in water sports. The seaside village is home to the oldest lifeboat in Ireland (200 years this year!), runs an annual family festival which includes a regatta. People all over Cork have attended the regatta since the early 1900’s.

High output agriculture has long been associated with Barryroe, and Barryroe’s co-op is celebrating its 100th year in existence. A special celebration is planned for September. Barryroe also runs an annual agricultural show, this includes calf showing, horse riding, dog shows, art, and baking competitions and much more and it takes place in the first week of July.

Come and visit us in Barryroe! During the summer Sunday Mass is celebrated in Barryroe church (P72 T206) at 10.00am, with another Mass during July and August only in Courtmacsherry (P72 W259) at 9.00am.
