Clonakilty - Nice to meet you!

Clonakilty lies in the middle of our six parishes. TY student and Clonakilty parishioner Michael Francis Collins presents his parish here for summer visitors and would-be visitors from the other five parishes of our family of parishes.

This is the fifth in a series of brief articles by TY students in Clonakilty Community College presenting our six parishes in turn. (Ed.)

Clonakilty is a vibrant town in the heart of West Cork, rich in history, character, and community pride. Whether you’re exploring the charming Model Railway Village or enjoying a tour of the award-winning Clonakilty Distillery, there’s something here for everyone.

Known as the Brewery Town, Clonakilty is located near one of Ireland’s most beautiful beaches, Inchydoney. It also extremely proud of being Ireland’s first autism-friendly town as well being the country’s first fair-trade town, a testament to its inclusive community.

Clonakilty takes great pride in its varied range of festivals and events, these include stepping back in time with the Old Time Fair, the prestigious South of Ireland Band Championships, the lively Street Carnival, the world-renowned Clonakilty International Guitar Festival, the community-focused Clonakilty Agricultural Show, and the thrilling West Cork Rally.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Darrara, sitting on the outskirts of town since 1897, is extremely important to the community. The Church of the Immaculate Conception standing tall in the centre of town was built in 1880 and during the construction of the catholic church, one of the workers by the name of John Sisk introduced Gaelic football to the town, leading to the establishment of the very successful Clonakilty GAA club, which has brought so much happiness, memories and state of the art facilities to the town. Another building that brings the community feeling is the Parish Centre, where many social events are held. The Brewery Town excels in all aspects of sport, Football, Hurling, Soccer, Golf and Rugby, all bringing silverware into the town.

The town has many tourist attractions including the ‘Big fella’s - Michael Collins’ - statue and house within Emmet Square where the Friday market occurs. The wheel pump in town, also known as the wheel of fortune, has been in Clonakilty since the 19th century.  A hero of the 1798 uprising, Tadgh O Donovan Ansa’s statue is located right in the middle of the town. The Clonakilty famous black pudding visitor centre is an experience like no other. Behind O Donovan’s hotel, you will see a statue of Tojo, a monkey who travelled with an American crew during the Second World War, who crashed landed their plane ‘taint the bird’ on White’s marsh at the foot of the town.

Come and visit us! During the summer, Sunday Mass is celebrated in Clonakilty parish church (P85 NT22) on Saturday evenings at 7.00pm and on Sunday mornings at 8.30am and 11.00am.
